This is the HDS 4 document entitled "Design of Roadside Channels", May 1965, FHWA EPD-86-102. Roadside drainage channels perform the vital function of diverting or removing surface water from the highway right-of-way. They should provide the most efficient disposal system consistent with cost, importance of the road, economy of maintenance, and legal requirements. One standard channel win rarely provide the most satisfactory drainage for all sections of a highway, although it might be adequate for most locations. Thus, the design engineer needs procedures for designing various types of channels. This publication discusses flow in roadside drainage channels, estimation of peak discharges from small areas, prevention of channel erosion, and presents methods for the design of drainage channels required to remove runoff from the area immediately adjacent to the highway.

    File Size: 148187 bytes
    File Date: Fri Sep 22 12:11:32 2006

There are many types of split flow situations that can occur in a river. The following is a list of the more commonly encountered split flow situations:

    1. Split flows caused by islands or high ground dividing the flow.

    2. Split flows caused by levee overtopping.

    3. Split flows caused by watershed divide overtopping.

    4. Split flows caused by diversion structures.

The HEC-2 split flow option is capable of analyzing all of the above split flow situations except for bifurcation of flow at islands or high ground. In addition, HEC-RAS cannot model any of the above split flow situations.

This document describes how to model the bifurcation of flow at an island using HEC-2 (or HEC-RAS) and a graphical interpolation method. This interpolation method can be used whenever flow is separated into two or more channels. For example, this method can be used to model divided flow when there are multiple bridge openings at a roadway crossing (when the conveyance is separated among the bridge openings).

This PDF technical document, "Debris Control Structures", FHWA EPD-86-106, discusses water-borne debris problems and structures used for controlling debris. An accumulation of debris at inlets of highway drainage structures is a frequent cause of unsatisfactory performance or malfunction. This accumulation may result in failure of the drainage structure, or overtopping of the roadway by flood water, or possible damage to the roadway and other property. Consideration of the need for debris-control structures should be an essential part of all hydraulic structure designs. This PDF technical document emphasizes on culverts because their relatively limited waterway area is subject to clogging by retention of debris at the inlet.

In this PDF technical document a system of classifying the type of debris expected from any drainage basin is followed by a list of types of debris-control structures. The basis for choosing the type of control structure is given and details of design are discussed.

In the United States, the average annual damage related to hydraulic problems at highway facilities on the Federal-aid system is $40 million. Damages by streams can be reduced significantly by considering channel stability. The types of river changes to be carefully considered relate to:

    1. lateral bank erosion
    2. degradation and aggradation of the streambed that continues over a period of years, and
    3. natural short-term fluctuations of streambed elevation that are usually associated with the passage of floods
